SoundAdvice-musical tips

REMEMBER! If you're not confident with certain instrument or equipment maintenance procedures, be sure to seek qualified assistance before attempting to do it yourself!

Thanks to Gary Marshall for this musical tip relating to cleaning electronic components.

Gary writes:
I was recently in Virginia visiting relatives, and my son asked me to replace the four 10" speakers in his (read that as "borrowed" from the Dad) Sunn Beta Lead Amp. After I replaced his speakers, I turned it on and noticed that virtually every one of his pots were really scratchy sounding. I first unplugged the amp and then, I pulled all the knobs and lightly sprayed each shaft with an electronic cleaner/deoxident called DeoxIT D5, by Caig Laboratories. I worked each shaft through the full range of movement and then waited 15-20 minutes and repeated. All the noise is now gone. The amp is clearer than when he first "borrowed" it from me.

I don't know if you've ever used D5 before, but it is very good. It is a little pricey, depending on where you get it. I have seen it as low as $6.95, but usually see it in the $9 - $13.95 range for a 5 oz. spray can, but 5 oz. lasts a long time.

Waaaaaay back in the early '60's, friend and fellow Washington, DC musician by the name of Roy Buchanan put me on to using TV tuner cleaner to clean volume and tone pots on amps. But, I've since found that D5 is a better formulation for electronic musical instrument controls than TV tuner cleaner. D5 is also used a lot to clean key contacts in electronic pianos & keyboards. Many times I've seen it bring back a flaky or intermittent key on a keyboard.

Enough reminiscing and rambling, thanks again for your tips, hope you can use this one.

Gary Marshall

Ask Edly...Music Theory Q+A

Here's this month's question of theory....edly

Dear Edly:
When improvising jazz tunes I run out of ideas for patterns or runs. Any suggestions? Second, it's odd that when playing the blues one can use the same blues scale all through the tune, but it sounds terrible if you play just one particular scale all through a standard, Why? Thanks for any insight.--Bill

Edly answers:
Bill, assuming you do have your arpeggios and scales/modes down, my first suggestion would be to stop thinking in terms of patterns and runs. Try improvising with your voice. Yup, that's right. Sing! Think of what you're playing as creating a melody instead of a bunch of strung-together phrases.

This will help you rely more on your ear, and less on formulas. Having said
that, and in direct contrast, there are books of arpeggio- and scale-based
patterns for improvisation. Without hearing you play, it's hard to say
which of these approaches would be better for you.

All of this is easier said than done, and will require some time and energy
on your part. For more ideas, I'd recommend the Improvisation Ideas chapter in my theory book.

Regarding your blues/jazz point I'll say this: The dissonances resulting
from the juxtaposition of the blues scale and blues chords are part of what make the blues sound like the blues. Secondly, simple blues stays firmly in one key. Jazz can dance through several key centers faster than you can say "Two, Five, One." If your note choices don't reflect that movement, the clientel will spill their martinis, and you may well not get asked back to the gig.

--------------------------------------------------

What is music theory, anyway? You hear so much about it, but does anybody really know what it is? Edly does!

Scales? Chords? Keys? Ear-training? Modes? Toads?

If you need help connecting the musical dots or playing musical works, send us your best (or dumbest) questions, and we'll have Edly, one of Earth's leading music theory experts, field the responses.

To get your head keyed in the right direction, visit Edly's website "Musical EdVentures" at http://www.edly.com
