Q> I just purchased an Epiphone Casino from you, and when I turn my amplifier up to the volume level that I need for stage work, I get a large amount of guitar feedback. None of my other guitars do this. (I also play a Strat and a PRS) I love the guitar, but how can I gig with it and not have feedback problems? A> The reason that you're having feedback occur is because the Casino is a hollowbody electric, and the body vibrates like an acoustic guitar. To prevent this from happening, get some soft foam rubber, and cut it into long, skinny strips, approximately 16" long and 3/4" thick. Gently insert the foam strips into your guitar through the f-holes, taking care not to put any pressure on the wiring inside. The foam will deaden some of the resonance in the guitar that causes feedback. You won't need to fill the guitar, as it won't take much to decrease the feedback. Start with a little foam rubber, and add more if you need, until you find the right amount. It also pulls out easily if you wish to remove it. Here's this month's question of theory.... Dear Edly: I play acoustic guitar and I have noticed that some chords that are played at different spots on the neck are composed of different notes. For example, the chord that is played first string, 4th fret, 2nd string 5th fret, 3rd string 4th fret, 4th string 6th fret, 5th string 7th fret and 6th string 4th fet is composed of the notes G#, E, B, G#, E and G#. Can this chord be played when the sheet music calls for E/G# ? I have another example. The chord that is played 1st string open, 2nd string open, 3rd string 4th fret, 4th string 6th fret, 5th string 7th fret, 6th string open is composed of notes E,B,B,G#,E,E. Can this chord be played when the sheet music calls for E/B? I have yet another example. The chord that is played 1st string open, 2nd string open, 3rd string 7th fret, 4th string 8th fret, 5th string 5th fret, 6th string open is composed of E,B,D,A,D,E. Can this be played in place of E/A or E/D? I would really appreciate it if you could help me out on this. I call it the mystery of the bass note but I know you would say there are no mysteries in music theory. Thank you. Edly answers: X/Y notation means "X chord over Y bass note." So, ANY E chord over a G# bass will suffice for E/G#. Your first example is right. In the second, you need a B bass note, not E. It's at the seventh fret on your low E. Your third example is farther off the mark. E/A and E/D are two different animals. In each case, grab an E chord of your choice, and put the appropriate bass note under it.
Stop playing it wrong! Send Edly your music theory questions! What is music theory, anyway? You hear so much about it, but does anybody really know what it is? Edly does! Scales? Chords? Keys? Ear-training? Modes? Toads? If you need help connecting the musical dots or playing musical works, send us your best (or dumbest) questions, and we'll have Edly, one of Earth's leading music theory experts, field the responses. We can't guarantee that all questions will be answered right away, but you do your best with the questions, and we'll do our best in getting you answers. We'll start with the Q+A next month. To get your head keyed in the right direction, visit Edly's website "Musical EdVentures" at http://www.edly.com
